Husker wrestlers drop spot heading into National Duals

By the Lincoln Journal Star

Tuesday, Jan 06, 2009 - 11:07:00 pm CST

The Nebraska wrestling team lost one point in the latest NWCA/Intermat poll and dropped one spot to fourth in the latest Division I weekly rankings.

The drop is significant because it means the Huskers will be seeded fourth for this weekend’s NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, which will feature 14 of the 22 highest-ranked teams.

The top six seeds in the National Duals are also the top six teams in the national rankings — Iowa, Iowa State, Cornell, Nebraska, Missouri and Ohio State.

Nebraska will open the competition at 9 a.m. Saturday against No. 20 Northwestern and will face either Missouri or No. 14 Penn State at 11 a.m.

The semifinals and finals will be held on Sunday.

Also represented at the national duals will be Divisions II and III, NAIA, junior colleges and women’s varsity teams.

Nebraska-Omaha, ranked No. 1 in the latest coaches’ poll, will be the top seed in the Division II tournament and will face Limestone. No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney will battle Pittsburgh-Johnstown.

Chadron State is unranked and will face eighth-seeded Mercyhurst.

Two former Lincoln East standouts are among the five UNK wrestlers ranked in their weight classes — Ryan Etherton (No. 1 at 149) and Keenan McCurdy (No. 7 at 157).

UNO has two top-ranked wrestlers Todd Meneeley (157) and Ross Taplin (174). Chadron’s Josh Majerus is No. 1 at 197.
